In the ever-shifting landscape of diets, Intuitive Eating has emerged as a prominent trend in recent years. Yet, amidst all the hype, Intuitive Eating is often misunderstood–perpetuated by misguided fitness influencers on social media. So what exactly is Intuitive Eating? What is it not? And who might benefit from adopting this approach?
One of the biggest misconceptions about Intuitive Eating is that it’s a diet. Many people understand Intuitive Eating as honoring your body, including cravings and your hunger and fullness cues – eating intuitively is not the same as Intuitive Eating. And while this is a component of Intuitive Eating, this approach goes beyond just relying on internal cues.
Additionally, it’s not uncommon to hear claims of weight loss attributed to Intuitive Eating, or questions about using it as a weight management strategy. But unlike most other fad diets, the goal of Intuitive Eating is not weight loss. Weight loss can occur, but it is not an intended outcome of Intuitive Eating.
